Botswana Wildlife
Elephants
Botswana is home to the largest population of elephants on the African continent—around 130,000—across the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park.
African Wild Dogs
There are estimated to be less than 6,600 African Wild Dogs remaining in the wild. Botswana is one of 8 counties with a viable population.
Leopards
Solitary, stealthy, and elusive, leopards are a highlight of any Botswana safari and a rare sighting.
Birds
Botswana is home to a rich and vibrant ecosystem of birds. There are over 500 spectacular species to discover.
Lions
Botswana is home to the second-largest population of lions on the continent of Africa with Savuti National Park being famous for its large elephant-hunting prides.
Zebras
From May to November, the seasonal rainfall in the Okavango Delta triggers the great zebra migration—when up to 30,000 zebras go on the longest land migration in Africa (covering 500 km one way).
Botswana Weather
There is no bad time to go on a Botswana safari. Every month offers incredible opportunities to see the wildlife and experience something amazing. In fact, many guests prefer visiting Botswana in the off-season because there are fewer tourists and they say it feels “more wild and exclusive.”
In general, Botswana’s climate is hot during the day and cool at night, which is typical of Southern Africa. You will not need to worry about humidity, but be prepared for wide temperature swings (like what you would experience in a desert) from sunrise to sunset. Winter (June to August) is the dry period and typically cooler. Summer (November to April) can be wet and hot, with rainfall prevalent in January and February.
July to October
High Season: Dry winter weather
April to June & November
Mid Season: Hotter summer months
December to March
Low Season: Rainiest months of the year

This makes Botswana the ideal multi-country safari destination. You can begin your trip in Cape Town, South Africa, where you can explore wine country, go whale watching, and see penguins. And then you can end your trip in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, and witness one of the world’s largest waterfalls: Mosi-oa-Tunya or the “Smoke that Thunders”.
